Physical Education at San Anton School

Start by doing what is necessary, then do what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible – St. Francis of Assisi

The Physical Education Dept.

The Physical Education Department consists of four teachers. Mr. Kenneth Deguara (Head of Dept.) and Mrs. Anna Maria Tedesco Vella take care of the Junior Sector while Mr. Roberto Pisani and Ms. Maria G. Camilleri are in charge of the Senior Sector.

The Aims Of Physical Education

The Physical Education Pragramme at San Anton School aims at:

  • Teaching Pupils the importance of a healthy lifestyle and give them the necessary information as to how such a lifestyle can be achieved.
  • Empowering pupils with positive self-esteem.
  • Providing pupils with the opportunity to participate actively in some form of physical activity for leisure purposes and/or competitive purpose.
  • Providing pupils with the opportunity to learn the rules of a number of games to enable them to follow these games in a passive way as spectators.
  • Assessing the pupils' potential and try to achieve the optimum from every pupil.

How To Achieve These Aims

The Physical Education Dept. is looking at three different categories of physical performance which fall under its umbrella:

  • Physical Recreation: Pupils' spontaneous play during school breaks or after school hours, a time where there is an opportunity for choice and participation is sought for its own sake.
  • Sport: A highly organised activity where rules and regulations control competitions. Participation requires skill and physical prowess, and are motivated not only by satisfaction (as in the case of physical recreation), but also by extrinsic factors such as medals.
  • Physical Education: Refers to the weekly lessons which are scheduled to be held during the normal school time-table as part of the school curriculum.
